In 1633, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan to investigate reports of their mentor's apostasy and to continue their mission among persecuted Christians. There they witness brutal anti-Christian oppression and the suffering of the local faithful. As the danger intensifies, Father Rodrigues is forced to confront a terrible choice between his beliefs and the lives of others.
