Nobody likes teacher Paul Hunham, not his students, not his fellow faculty, and not the headmaster. With nowhere to go over the Christmas holiday in 1970, he stays behind at school to supervise the students who cannot go home. Soon only one student remains, a troubled teenager named Angus, and they are joined by head cook Mary, who is grieving the loss of her son in Vietnam. Over two snowy weeks in New England, the three form an unlikely holiday family and learn they are not bound by their pasts.
