In 1929, writer Thomas Wolfe meets editor Max Perkins at Scribner's, expecting rejection but instead finding an unexpected champion for his work. Perkins helps shape Wolfe's sprawling manuscript into the novel Look Homeward, Angel, which becomes a critical and commercial success. Their collaboration continues on Of Time and the River, but the strain of cutting Wolfe’s excessive prose begins to damage their friendship. As Wolfe’s success grows, gratitude gives way to resentment and their relationship slowly deteriorates.
