The Promised Land
Biography, Drama, History

In 18th-century Denmark, the king and his officials try for decades to settle and cultivate the harsh, boggy lands of Jutland, but fail because of poor soil, severe weather, and the presence of drifters and criminals. In 1755, after 25 years of service, Captain Ludvig Kahlen retires and decides to take on the land himself, hoping that success will earn him a noble title and an estate. But once there, he faces a lack of money and labor, as well as a violent local landowner, Frederik de Schinkel, who claims the land as his own.
