Spring 1945 on Amrum Island. In the final days of the war, 12-year-old Nanning struggles to help his family survive: he works the fields, gathers driftwood for fuel, and does whatever he can to bring food home. His mother, a committed Nazi, is heavily pregnant, while his father is away at the front. After the birth of Nanning’s sister and Hitler’s death, his mother falls into a deep depression and refuses to eat, and Nanning tries by every means to get her white bread with butter and honey.
