In the 17th century, shortly after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, a former soldier arrives in an isolated Protestant village in Germany. She is actually a woman named Rose, disguised as a man, and she tries to secure her place in the suspicious community using forged documents for an abandoned local estate. To protect her deception and strengthen her position, she even considers a marriage of convenience to the daughter of a wealthy farmer, Susanne. The film is based on real historical accounts of European women who hid their gender in order to survive and gain freedom.
