In 1979 China, a family has two daughters, Yun and Mei, despite the one-child policy. To protect her loved ones, the younger daughter Mei is forced to live in hiding. In the mid-1990s she arrives in Rome and begins searching for her older sister, whose trail leads to a Chinese restaurant called the Forbidden City in the Esquilino district. There Mei meets Marcello, a cook from a nearby restaurant who is also struggling with his own family problems.
