Margherita is going through a very difficult period in her life. Professionally, the middle-aged film director begins to wonder whether the committed films she has been making truly reflect the world she lives in, and she also clashes with her crew and with Barry Huggins, a well-known American actor of Italian origin who proves difficult and uncontrollable. On the personal side, things are no better: she has left her life partner, cannot relate to her teenage daughter, and her mother is seriously ill.
