In 1952, twenty-three-year-old New Yorker Marty Mauser pours everything he has into table tennis, despite having no official support or money to pursue the sport. He wants to prove he is the best in the world, help support his mother, and raise the profile of American table tennis, but his self-absorbed drive constantly pushes him into trouble. As he chases the world championships in Japan, he finds himself relying on a retired movie star and her powerful husband, while every step forward seems to lead to two steps back.
