In 1774, fleeing persecution, Ann Lee and her fellow believers leave England for New York state. There she establishes the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, a religious movement that promotes gender equality, communal property, and worship. The film depicts the rise of a utopian Shaker community whose faith is expressed through song and dance, with Ann Lee proclaimed as its spiritual leader.
