In the 1950s, a Polish engineer emigrates to France and cannot obtain patents for his many inventions, leaving him unable to earn a living from his profession. He turns to counterfeiting banknotes and does so so skillfully that the Bank of France will do anything to catch him. He leads a double life, hiding the truth from his family, while an experienced inspector follows his trail, determined to identify the counterfeiter by the signature of his work.
