In 1914, as World War I begins and the Ottoman Empire descends into chaos, medical student Michael Boghosian arrives in Constantinople with plans to bring modern medicine back to his village. There he meets and falls for Armenian artist Ana, even though she is involved with American photojournalist Chris Myers. As the empire begins to persecute its Armenian minority, their romantic rivalry is overtaken by a struggle to survive and bear witness to the truth.
