The Kims — mother and father Chung-sook and Ki-taek, and their young adult children Ki-woo and Ki-jung — are a poor family living in a shabby half-basement apartment in Seoul. When Ki-woo is offered a chance to take over a tutoring job for the wealthy Park family, he pretends to be a university student and lands inside their modern designer house. Soon the Kims begin an elaborate scheme to replace the Parks' household staff and insert themselves deeper into the family's life.
