In 1977 Brazil, amid political turmoil, a widowed former research scientist arrives in Recife during Carnival and stays at a boarding house run by a friendly elderly woman. He visits his young son, who lives with his grandparents, takes a job at the city identification bureau, and looks for his mother's documents while hiding from someone and trying to make sense of the danger closing in around him.
